Five players scored double digits for Florida Atlantic, led by Breana Turner's 15 points and the Owls shot 52 percent in the second half as FAU defeated Bethune-Cookman 83-69 at FAU Arena Tuesday night.
The Owls took the lead early in the first half and never trailed after a Carla Stubbs jumper made it 7-6 just over seven minutes into the first half. The Owls went on a 15-4 run to push the lead into double-digits and led 34-23 at the half. FAU then went on an 8-0 run in the second half on four straight lay-ups and Bethune-Cookman never got close after that.
"I felt like we were able to do a nice job of pushing the ball for layups," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "I still feel like we really need to improve in our half-court offense."
FAU (2-2) outscored Bethune-Cookman in bench points 37-11, due in large part to Turner and Mercedes Thompson, who had 14 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes. Jaimie Givens and Carla Stubbs had their second straight double-digit output with 13 and 12 points respectively. Jessica Knurick added 10 points for the Owls, who out rebounded the Wildcats 49-41.
Bethune-Cookman (2-1) was led by Demetria Frank who scored 21 points. Keturah Newkirk added 20 points on six three-pointers, many of which came in the second half. The Wildcats struggled in the first half from the field, only connecting on eight of 30 shots.
FAU hosts the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, November 29. The Owls will lead off against Tennessee Tech at 3 p.m. followed by Georgia Tech facing No. 9 Texas at 5 p.m. The two winners will face each other in the championship at 5 p.m. with the consolation game coming before that at 3 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
