LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday at Burns Park, snapping the Owls' five-game winning-streak. It was FAU's first Sun Belt Conference setback since October 5.
Another early goal by Laura Hyvonen had allowed Florida Atlantic (6-9-1, 5-4-1 Sun Belt) a lead at the half but UALR (8-10-1, 4-6 Sun Belt) rallied to score three times in the second period to win their second-straight.
Hyvonen got her sixth goal of the year in the 4th minute off a pass from teammate Alanna Jordan to make the score 1-0. Hyvonen scored in the opening stages in FAU's win over Arkansas State University on Friday. Neither team would dent the scoreboard again for the remainder of the opening period.
The Trojans got their first goal of the day when Grace Rich beat a defender one on one and slipped a goal past FAU goalkeeper Jessica Badders in the 61st minute to tie the game at 1-1.
The Trojans would then gain the lead in the 76th minute when freshman Christina Veasley scored for the second straight game on a header off of a free kick from teammate Alex Rustad who earned fourth assist of the season, which is tied for the team lead.
With UALR leading 2-1, the Owls would find a way to tie the game again just six minutes later when Ashley Mannarino scored her sixth goal of the season. Jannica Tjeder was credited with the assist.
The Trojans answered when Rachel Maina scored her third goal of the season and second consecutive game-winner, converting from 15 yards in the 86th minute to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
With FAU's victory over ASU Friday, the Owls clinched a berth into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 5-9 in Denton, Texas.
