JONESBORO, AR - Kala Abdell had a season-high 15 kills, but the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to Arkansas State in five sets on Friday (25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 24-26, 11-15).
The first set was tied at 8 when Casey LaRocca served FAU to seven straight points and helped the Owls win the first set 25-18. Morgan Johns had four kills and a serving run of her own in the set. The Red Wolves leapt out to a lead that got as big as five points in the second set, but FAU was able to set matters up at 21. The two traded the next four points before kills by Krystena Castro and Kristyna Dzmuranova gave the Owls a 25-23 win and a two-set lead. ASU got off to another quick start in the third set and this time FAU was unable to recover, losing the set 25-21.
Set four was a back and forth battle between the two teams from beginning to end, as neither team was able to keep control of the action. The score was tied at 24 when Kristen Catalane served back to back aces to give ASU the set and tie the match at two sets apiece. FAU took a 4-1 lead in the fifth set before the Red Wolves scored five of the next seven points to take a 6-4 lead. FAU tied the set up at before ASU took the next four points, eventually winning 15-11.
The Owls travel to Little Rock to take on UALR Sunday at 2 p.m.
