The first 90 minutes of play wasn't enough to break a 1-1 tie between Mid American Conference opponents Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and Florida Atlantic University on senior day for the Owls. Ending the last home match for five FAU seniors fittingly was senior Shire Standnes. Standnes knocked in the game winning goal on an assist from freshman Evan Kluge in sudden death overtime to beat BGSU (3-9-1, 0-4-0) by a score of 2-1.
FAU improves to 4-9-1 overall and 1-4-1 in MAC play with Standnes' sixth goal of the season. FAU has won two consecutive matches in overtime beating Duke University 2-1 earlier in the week, also on a Standnes goal.
The match was fairly physical with four cautions, 19 combined fouls and a 0-0 defense-emphasized first half. Senior Guilherme Ribeiro broke the tie in the second half with a score in the 66 minute, assisted by sophomore Trevor Pluskota. Ribeiro has scored two goals during the 2008 season.
Bowling Green State retaliated with an unassisted goal in the 77 minute from Cameron Hepple. Both teams were able to stand their ground the last 13 minutes of regulation to send the match into overtime, where Standnes nailed a cross over pass from Kluge in the 92 minute to end the match.
FAU will next play at the University of South Florida on Tuesday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m.
