DURHAM, NC - The Florida Atlantic University (3-9-1) men's soccer team defeated Duke University in overtime 2-1. A member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Duke (6-5-1) is ranked third in the South Region.
Locked at 0-0 in the 35 minute, Duke's Mike Grella knocked in the Bluedevil's only goal of the night in a one-on-one situation with FAU goalkeeper Phillip Lamarre (Margate, FL/Stoneman Douglas H.S.). Lamarre tallied five saves during the match.
With only seven minutes remaining in regulation sophomore Gianni Piccoletti (Boca Raton, FL/Spanish River H.S.) scored an unassisted goal. Tied at 1-1 in overtime, senior Shire Standnes (Oslo, Norway/Bjerke Videregaaende Skole) booted the game winning goal in the 97 minute of play. Standnes' team-leading fifth goal of the season was assisted by a pass from junior Trey McEntee.
The FAU men's soccer team will be back in action against MAC opponent Bowling Green State University (3-7-1) at FAU Field on Sunday, October 19 at 10 a.m. The match will be the last home competition for the 2008 men's soccer team and five senior Owls will be recognized prior to kickoff.
