The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team shot nine of 32 in the second half and couldn't stop a balanced effort from Denver on Thursday night as the Pioneers defeated FAU 69-53 at Lynn University.
FAU got off to a good start early; the Owls led 9-4 after a three-pointer by Jaimie Givens, who had 12 points for the Owls. Denver would right the ship as the half progressed and take a 32-27 lead into halftime. The Pioneers were led by Sara Benham, who came off the bench to score 18 points.
The Owls would get no closer than three points early in the second half. With the score 46-40 Denver in the second, FAU had four six chances to cut the lead, but would miss all six shots during that stretch. And Denver proceeded to go on a 15-6 run after a three by Brooke Meyer. The Owls were never close after that point.
"I can't fault the players for the effort, but we couldn't get a shot to fall," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We've just got to find a way to simplify things offensively."
Carla Stubbs led the Owls (4-13, 0-8 Sun Belt) with a career-high 20 points. Her total ties for the most points any FAU player has scored this year. Two other players scored double-digits for the Owls, Givens had 12 and Andrea Taylor had a season-high 11 points.
Four players scored double-figures for Denver (7-11, 2-5 SBC), led by Benham's 18. Nnenna Akotaobi added 13 points and six rebounds, Brooke Meyer added 11 and Ashly Robinson scored 10 off the bench. The Pioneers shot a consistent 25 of 59 (42.4%) on the game and outrebounded FAU 42-36.
Tonight's game was played at Lynn University due to the Republican Presidential Debate at Florida Atlantic. The Owls go on the road on Sunday to face Arkansas-Little Rock at 3 p.m.
