The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball got off to a rough start and never recovered on Sunday. Arkansas-Little Rock went on a 12-0 run to start the game as they defeated the Owls 66-44 at the Jack Stephens Center.
For Arkansas-Little Rock, it was a two person show, led by forward Nikya Hughes. She had seven of her game-high 22 points during the game opening 12-0 run which FAU never recovered from. The Owls would fight back in the second half, Breana Cox went four of four from the field and score eight points in the first half as the Owls cut the lead at one point to eight. But cold shooting would prevent them from getting any closer, as FAU trailed 31-19 at halftime.
UALR pulled away in the second half, thanks to their other main scorer, guard Kim Sitzmann. She had 21 in the ball game and with the Trojans leading 35-23, her two three-pointers put the game out of reach. FAU was led by Jaimie Givens with 12 points. She was the only Owl in double figures. The Owls shot 37.5 percent on the game (18-48) and committed 20 turnovers. They were also outrebounded by Arkansas-Little Rock 35-29.
Hughes shot seven of 12 from the field for UALR (15-5, 7-2 Sun Belt) and seven of 10 from the foul line to score her 22 points. Sitzmann was four of 12 from beyond the arc to score her 21 points. Arkansas-Little Rock shot 22 of 48 (45.8%) from the field.and hit 15-24 free-throws. FAU falls to 4-14, 0-9 in the Sun Belt. They have lost their eight game in a row.
