GAINESVILLE, FL - The Florida Atlantic University cross country team started its season at the Mountain Dew Gator Invitational on Friday. The womens' team finished 5th, in front of teams from Florida State and Miami.
Friederike Feil was the high individual finisher for FAU, completing the women's 5K in 19:04.72, good for 20th. Barbara Fronrath finished 30th in 19:45.78, followed closely Katie Quick who finished in 19:54.55 to take 32nd place in her first collegiate meet. Toni Jackson ran a time of 20:34.01 to finish 55th. Freshman Emily Seymore rounded out the scoring for the Owls, finishing 59th in 20:37.79. Christina Dutko (21:02.53, 73rd) and Jen Schwan (21:30.09, 93rd) also competed for FAU.
"The women haven't taken a lot of time off since we started practicing and I think it showed a little in their performance today," said head cross country coach Alex Smolka.
Taylor Reeves finished 38th in 26:58.80 to lead the FAU men. Kyle Butler ran a time of 27:51.93 to take 61st in his first meet. Stephen Dassin finished in 77th place with a time of 28:21.34. John Roy (29:07.22, 96th and Tim Haines (29:36.24, 106th) also scored for the Owls. Jordan Dopkins (29:42.61, 111th),David Rundio (30:02.66, 116th), Daniel Phillips (30:11.34, 119th) and Brandon Berwick (30:24.39, 122nd)soon followed to round out the field for the men.
"Overall, the men did extremely well compared to last year. The returners all improved and our newcomers did well for their first race."
