ORLANDO, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball split its two games at the UCF Invitational on Friday.
FAU defeated Montana State in four games (30-18, 30-22, 31-33, 30-26) on Friday morning. The Owls were able to shake off the errors that plagued them Thursday night as they hit .516 on their way to a 30-18 game one victory. Game two was tied at nine when a Casey LaRocca serving run led to seven straight Owl points. A Kala Abdell serving run soon followed and FAU's lead was out to 19-10. A Katie Arvidson kill gave FAU the 30-22 game two win.
The serving of Casey LaRocca and Kala Abdell also powered FAU to an early 9-2 lead in game three. The Bobcats rallied, eventually tying the score at 24 before taking a 29-25 lead as part of an 8-1 run. The Owls managed to tie the game once again, this time at 29, behind the serving of freshman Mallory Deneen. A Deneen ace gave the Owls match point at 30-29, before Montana State took four of the next five points and cut the Owls lead in half at two games to one. Game four featured 11 ties and five lead changes before Casey LaRocca found a soft spot in the Bobcat defense to clinch the game and match 30-26.
North Florida swept the final three games to defeat FAU in the Owls' second game of the day to win (30-19, 30-25, 19-30, 12-30, 12-15). There were four lead changes and 13 ties in game one, before a 14-4 Owl run put FAU ahead for good on the way to a 30-19 victory. Game two was also hotly contested, before a 7-2 run gave the Owls a 2-0 lead. A Kaley Read serving run was the turning point in game three as the Ospreys won the game 30-19. Serving was also the difference in game four as UNF took control and evened the match at two games each.
The Owls were leading 11-9 in game five, before UNF took six of the next seven points, capped by an Amy Stroder kill to win the game and the match. FAU now stands at 2-7 on the season. They finish play at the UCF Invitational tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. when they take on Central Michigan. The game will be available via GameTracker on fausports.com.
