ORLANDO, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team rallied to take a five game marathon (27-30, 27-30, 30-23, 30-27, 16-14) from Central Michigan on Saturday.
The Owls lost the first two games of the match by identical scores of 27-30. Krystena Castro had four straight kills before a Morgan Johns ace gave FAU a 30-23 game three win. Four of Johns' career high seven service aces came during the game. Castro was also the driving force behind FAU's 30-27 game four win as the sophomore had eight kills and two block assists in the game. Casey LaRocca had assists on 14 of FAU's 17 kills during the game that pulled the Owls even at two games apiece.
Johns had two more service aces during a serving run that gave the Owls a 9-5 lead in game five. The Chippewas rallied to tie the match at 14 before the Owls took the last two points to win the match in dramatic fashion.
"I never felt like we were out of the match, the girls played really well and overall I think this was a really good weekend for us," said head volleyball coach Jody Brown.
Junior Katie Arvidson, who had 39 kills and six service aces over the weekend was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Owls improve to 3-7 on the season and will take some time off before opening conference play on September 21 when they travel to the Bayou State and face New Orleans, Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe on back-to-back-to-back days.
