MURFREESBORO, TN - Alicia Tirelli scored two goals 10 minutes apart in the second-half to give the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Middle Tennessee at Blue Raider Field in the Sun Belt opener for both squads.
Tirelli scored her third goal of the season to open the scoring in the 74th minute, carrying the ball into the box and firing a shot from 15-yards out past the Blue Raider goalkeeper.
After the Blue Raiders tied the game at one in the 81st minute on Jen Threlkeld's sixth goal of the year, Tirelli responded with her second goal of the night on a pass from Allyssa Eramo just three minutes later in the 84th minute.
The two teams combined for 37 shot attempts, with the Owls holding the edge 19-18. Each team fired eight shots in the first half.
The MTSU goal in the 81st minute ended FAU goalkeeper Jessica Badders' shutout streak at 410:31. The junior made eight saves in the match, five coming in the second half.
Tirelli led the Owls with six shot attempts, five on net. Monique Cabrera and Eramo each added two shots on net.
It was the second-straight season the Owls opened up the Sun Belt schedule against the Blue Raiders. Last season, MTSU edged the Owls by the same score, 2-1, at FAU Field.
The Owls (4-3-1, 1-0-0 SBC) will now travel to Western Kentucky to face the Hilltoppers on Sunday.
