The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost both of its matches on the second day of the Drake Invitational. In the first match of the day, FAU lost to Wisconsin-Green Bay in three games (23-30, 28-30, 22-30).
The serving of UWGB's Betty Slinger powered the Phoenix to seven points over two separate occasions to take game one 30-23. Game two featured 11 ties and two lead changes. The final tie came at 28 before two straight Liesl Tesch kills gave the Phoenix a 30-28 victory. UWGB had scoring runs of three, five and eight straight points on the way to a 30-22 match clinching win in game three.
In their second match of the day the Owls, they lost to the host Drake Bulldogs (28-30, 27-30, 23-30). The Bulldogs took the first six points of game one on a serving run by Sarah Schuster. FAU would not go away, however, and the Owls pull within one at 29-28 on a Kala Abdell kill. Drake won game one on the next serve as Emily Madden found a hole in the FAU defense and made the clinching kill.
Game two started in a similar fashion as the Bulldogs got out to an early 6-2 lead. The Owls mounted a charge once again and took a 20-18 lead on a serving run by Katie Arvidson. The two teams found themselves tied at 26 when Drake took four of the next five points to go up two games to none headed to the locker room. Game three featured four lead changes and six ties. The final tie came at 22, when Drake went on an 8-1 match ending run.
Casey LaRocca, who had 118 assists over the weekend, made the All-Tournament team. The Owls fall to 1-5 on the season. They travel to Orlando to take on UCF Thursday night. The match in scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
