BOCA RATON, FL - Two former Florida Atlantic University pitchers were recently called up by major league teams.
Carmen Cali spent the early part of the year on the Twins' major league roster before being sent down in June. He returned to the majors for a short time in July, and returned again in August and has stayed with the team since. He has a 4.79 ERA in 23 appearances on the season.
Tommy Murphy started the season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and appeared in 14 games before being sent to the Angels' AAA affiliate in Salt Lake City. He was recently called back up to Anaheim and picked up a base hit in his first at-bat. Cali and Murphy join Tim Harikkala as former FAU players to have played in the majors this season.
Another former Owl, Jeff Fiorentino spent the year with the Orioles' AA affiliate in Bowie, Maryland. Fiorentino hit .282 with 16 home runs and was selected to play in the Arizona Fall League. Fiorentino signed with the Orioles in 2004 and made his major league debut in May of 2005.
