FAU Fights Back for Comeback Win vs. Stetson Owls Battle from 5-0 Deficit for 6-5 Win
BOCA RATON, FL (May 7, 2007) - Six straight batters reached to start the bottom of the third and the Florida Atlantic University softball team scored six runs in the inning to overcome a 5-0 deficit against Stetson and take the 6-5 win at FAU Softball Stadium on Monday. All five Stetson runs came in with two out, with the big blow a grand slam off the bat of Hatter shortstop Lindsay Wightman. The slam put the Hatters up 5-0, after Musillo had used just 15 pitches to get through the first two innings. Melissa Moore doubled off the glove of the third baseman to lead off the bottom of the third for FAU and Annie Voyles reached on an error. With two on, Ambar Jones singled up the middle to load the bases for Jenna Lopez. After a passed ball scored Moore and moved the other two runners up, Lopez singled into right to drive in both runners. The ball got under the glove of the right fielder, allowing Lopez to check in a third, and Mandie Fishback singled up the middle to trim the five-run lead to a single run, 5-4. Blair Bodenmiller singled through the right side to put runners on first and second, still with no outs. Amy Bukovich laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up for the first out of the inning. Becky Brandies lined a single off the third baseman to tie the game at five, and an error by Wightman allowed the go-ahead run to score as Brandies crossed the plate. Musillo would face danger in three of the final four innings, but got two double plays to help extinguish rallies in the fourth and seventh and retired three straight after back-to-back singles led off the sixth. With the win, the Owls have won nine-of-10 and improve to 37-22. FAU swept the season-series with Stetson, 2-0. Musillo has now won 12 straight to improve to 22-10 despite allowing a season-high 13 hits. The no. 1 seeded Owls will travel tomorrow to Middle Tennessee, where they will face the no. 8 seed Florida International. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., eastern. - FAU -
