BOCA RATON, FL - Thanks to a series sweep of Florida International and winning eight of their last nine conference games, the Florida Atlantic University softball team has been crowned the Sun Belt Conference's regular-season champion.
FAU needed help heading into the final weekend, needing South Alabama to take two from Troy and Louisiana-Monroe to take a game from Louisiana-Lafayette, and both of those things happened along with the Owls' sweep of the Golden Panthers to give FAU the crown and the no. 1 seed in next week's SBC Championship Tournament.
The Owls earn the regular-season title in their first year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The program has earned nine Atlantic Sun postseason championships in the last 10 years, and has made seven NCAA Regional appearances since 1999.
