MURFREESBORO, TN - Melissa Moore smacked a two-run single in the second and Annie Voyles blasted a solo home run and the Florida Atlantic University softball team took a 4-0 decision over South Alabama on the second day of the Sun Belt Conference tournament at Blue Raider Field on Thursday.
Florida Atlantic also got a three-hit shutout from Jen Musillo, who rebounded nicely after throwing a 15-inning game Wednesday against Florida International.
The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, thanks to a Blair Bodenmiller leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt by Amy Bukovich and a single by Lauren Crandall. Melissa Moore followed with a two out single that scored both, putting the Owls on top.
FAU would add a run in the third to make it 3-0 after three innings on a Bodenmiller double off the right field to score Jenna Lopez who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Annie Voyles would add the fourth run with a solo home run in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Musillo sprinkled three hits over seven innings and allowed just two runners to reach as far as second base, striking out five in the process.
She faced only one tough jam in the ballgame, when South Alabama used a hit batter and an infield single to put two aboard with one out, but Musillo induced a double-play off the bat of Kait Chernomaz.
The no. 1 seeded Owls (37-23) survived their first elimination game, advancing to face the loser of the no. 4 Middle Tennessee/no. 8 Florida International match-up later tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., eastern on Friday.
