TUSCALOOSA, AL (April 3, 2007) - Blair Bodenmiller hit a two-run home run and Amber Barton settled down after giving up a three-run home run, but the Florida Atlantic University softball team was edged in nine innings by the Northwestern State Demons, 4-3 at the Alabama Softball Complex on Tuesday.
The Demons went ahead 3-0 on a three-run homer by starting pitcher Amanda Glenn in the top of the third, but the Owls fought right back in their half of the third.
Jenna Lopez singled leading off the inning and Becky Brandies doubled off the wall to drive her in and make the score 3-1. Brandies was still on second with two out when Bodenmiller took an 0-2 pitch from Glenn over the fence in left center to tie the game at three.
The teams traded missed scoring chances until the ninth, when an error allowed Margaret Patterson to reach with one out. Glenn doubled to right putting runners on second and third, and the winning run was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Jameson.
FAU mounted a rally in the ninth when Barton singled to lead off the inning and Bodenmiller reached on an error attempting to sacrifice, but the Owls failed to score.
Barton (3-4) went the distance, giving up 13 hits, four runs (three earned) and striking out five while walking three.
The Owls (23-15) will face no. 3 Alabama later today. The game was scheduled for 7 p.m., eastern, but that start time will likely be pushed back and follow 30 minutes after Alabama and Northwestern State play at 6 p.m.
