BOCA RATON, FL - Jen Musillo threw a two-hitter and Becky Brandies had a two-run double as the Florida Atlantic University softball team took a 5-1 decision over Louisiana-Monroe at FAU Softball Stadium on Sunday.
The Owls got a run in the third when Charlotte Baird singled over the head of ULM starting pitcher Lindsay Rittenhouse with one out. After a pop out, Jenna Lopez was hit by a pitch and Mandie Fishback walked to load the based for Blair Bodenmiller. On a full count pitch, Bodenmiller was hit on the leg to drive in a run for a 1-0 FAU lead.
Musillo would retire the first eight batters before walking the no. 9 hitter Cary Roussel, but would bounce back to retire the next seven batters and take a no-hitter into the sixth.
In the sixth, Musillo struck out the leadoff batter Kandace Causey, but the ball was in the dirt and the throw down to first was over the head of Vanessa Suarez into right field. Causey took second on the play, moved up to third on a one-out sacrifice to put a runner at third at two out.
ULM pinch-hitter Michelle Farrell-Fink pounded a ball off the ground that went over the head of Amy Bukovich at third for the Warhawks' first hit, scoring Causey and tying the game at one.
The Owls would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a leadoff double by Mandie Fishback and a single by Bodenmiller to start the inning. A groundout would move Bodenmiller up to second, and Becky Brandies followed with a two-run double down the left field line to put FAU on top 3-1.
After a walk to Lauren Crandall, ULM went to the bullpen to try and extinguish the Owl rally, but it provided no relief. Two wild pitches and a passed ball led to two more runs, putting FAU in front, 5-1.
Musillo would retire the first two batters in the seventh before allowing a one-out single to Heather Williams, but struck out Lindsey Taylor to end the ballgame and give the series win to FAU. She would finish the game with eight strikeouts, walking one and allowing two hits. ULM's only run was unearned. The senior has now won her last four decisions.
The Owls (28-21, 8-7 SBC) will travel next week to face Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee for three-game sets. All six games can be heard on FAUsports.com.
