The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team defeated St. Johns 4-3 on Tuesday.
The Owls narrowly missed the doubles' point when Daniel Vardag and Eddie Majcher fell to Louis Desmarteaux and Martin Kosut 9-7 in the deciding match at no. 2 doubles. Olivier Sajous and Lawrence Harradine both won in straight sets at no.1 and no.6 singles respectively, to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
Eddie Majcher came back from a set down to win at no.5, putting the Owls just one win away from victory. The Red Storm would not go down easily as Alex Svetlakov defeated Daniel Vardag in straight sets to win at no. 3 and Corey Smith fell in three sets to Martin Kosut at no.4 to tie the match at 3-3.
That meant the match between Karol Szmurlo and Artem Vlasenko at no.2 would decide the outcome. Szmurlo found himself down a set after dropping the first to Vlasenko 6-4. Szmurlo took the second set by the same score before winning the final set 6-2 and clinching the match for the Owls.
"It is nice to win a close one," said Head Coach David Komie after the match. "Hopefully, that will get us over the hurdle."
FAU returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Temple at Patch Reef Park. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
