BOCA RATON, FL - Blair Bodenmiller hit her third home run of the week and drove in five for the second time in as many days as the Florida Atlantic University softball team salvaged a split of the team's Sunday doubleheader with Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas at FAU Softball Stadium.
The Owls dropped the first game 5-0, thanks to four solo home runs by the Mean Green, despite a strong start by freshman Amber Barton, who went 5.1 innings, giving up four hits, three of which were solo home runs, walked one and struck out a season-high six.
FAU loaded the bases with no one out in the first inning of game one, but couldn't push anyone across. They would threaten again in the second with runners on the corners, but once again failed to score as the Owls were blanked on two hits.
In game two, the Owls fell behind 2-0 on yet another UNT home run in the third, but came back strong with four runs in the bottom of the third. Two runs came home on bases-loaded walks by Mandie Fishback and Blair Bodenmiller, and two more scored on a Jen Musillo two-run single.
FAU would add a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Bodenmiller, and would end the game in the sixth with a five-run inning, with the game ending on a three-run home run by Bodenmiller. Ambar Jones added a two run single earlier in the frame.
Musillo (8-7) got the start on the mound, giving up three hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five over six innings in the 10-2 win.
The Owls (20-14, 2-4 SBC) will now embark on a 12-game road swing, nine of which will come on an eight-day trip through Alabama, where FAU will face conference foes South Alabama and Troy along with Auburn, Alabama and Northwestern State. The trip starts with a three-game set against South Alabama on March 31-April 1.
