BOCA RATON, FL (February 10, 2007) - Jen Musillo threw a two-hit shutout over five innings while striking out nine and Meghan Doonan allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings as the Florida Atlantic University softball team got off to a 2-0 start against UCF and Miami (OH) at FAU Softball Stadium on Friday.
Both games were a part of the first day's action at the Miken Invitational.
Musillo was brilliant against UCF as she struck out five in a row at one point, and was in command the entire game. The Owls offense was aided by five Golden Knight errors which led to eight unearned runs in a 10-0 run-rule win after five.
Doonan held the Redhawks in check for a majority of the game outside some trouble in the third, when back-to-back extra-base hits yielded two runs. FAU rallied with six runs of their own in the top of the fourth to cruise to an 8-2 victory over Miami (OH).
Charlotte Baird was the offensive star of day one, going 3-for-3 on the day with two singles and a solo home run. Lauren Crandall scored three runs, as did Mandie Fishback and Blair Bodenmiller.
Amy Bukovich collected three hits on the day in seven at-bats, while Musillo, Fishback and Bodenmiller each had two. Bukovich and freshman Ambar Jones drove in four runs each in the two games, while Fishback and Crandall each drove in a pair.
The Owls will return to action at approximately 6 p.m., eastern tomorrow against Pittsburgh before taking on the South Carolina Gamecocks at 8 p.m., as Day Two of the Miken Invitational leads into Championship Day action on Sunday.
