BOCA RATON, FL - Freshman outfielder Hailey Broyles gave the Florida Atlantic University softball team an early 1-0 lead, but the University of South Carolina Gamecocks fought back to earn a 3-1 victory at FAU Softball Stadium in the championship game of the Miken Invitational on Sunday.
Ambar Jones, Becky Brandies, Melissa Moore and Broyles accounted for FAU's four hits. Jones and Moore had the only extra-base hits with a double each.
Jen Musillo got the start on the mound and struggled early but managed to work out of a major jam in the first with the aide of a double play on a single, in which USC's Amber Voigt was thrown out at the plate and tournament MVP McKenna Hughes was caught off second base.
FAU picked up its run in the second when Brandies singled with one out, moved to second on a walk to Moore and scored on the Broyles single. USC got two runs in the third thanks to back-to-back singles to start the inning, a throwing error and a wild pitch.
Another throwing error and a second wild pitch would lead to another USC run in the fifth following a leadoff double by Tori Martin. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Moore gave the Owls life with a two-out, two-strike double to left center, but Broyles would fly out to Martin in center to end the game.
Musillo took the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season. She went six innings, giving up eight hits and three runs, none of them earned, Krystle Robinson got the win and improves to 2-0. Melissa Hendon was credited with the save, working two scoreless innings of relief.
FAU will host the FAU Classic at FAU Softball Stadium on February 16-18. Michigan, Maryland, St. John's, East Carolina and Long Island make up the field for the Owls' second tournament of the season.
