BOCA RATON, FL - A shot that was redirected multiple times in front of the net found twine and proved to be the lone goal in a 1-0 loss for Florida Atlantic University against the University of North Texas at FAU Field on Sunday.
With the game scoreless UNT's Janaye Woods fired a shot from the left side after take a cross from Danielle Herron, and the ball clipped a pair of players in front of the net and trickled into the near corner to give the Mean Green a 1-0 edge in the sixth minute.
Both teams created several quality scoring chances, and the Owls out-shot the Mean Green 6-4 in the first half. FAU forced UNT goalkeeper Amanda Hall to make four saves, while FAU goalkeeper Jessica Badders made one.
FAU pushed for the equalizer early and often in the second half, as the Owls registered the first five shot attempts of the frame. The first shot of the half for North Texas rang off the crossbar in the 73rd minute off the foot of Jessie Wolfe.
UNT would have another quality chance in the 81st minute, when Woods broke in alone on the right side and fired a shot that Badders dove to her left to knock away.
Just three minutes later FAU junior Janeke Simpkins, playing a forward position instead of her usual defender position, broke in alone from the left side and fired a shot that was stopped by Hall.
Florida Atlantic held a 13-8 edge in shots for the contest, but six corner kicks in the final 45 minutes allowed North Texas to keep the pressure down in FAU's end for several minutes.
Defender Gillian Baggott led the Owls in shots with four. Michele Fazzari added two, and Allyssa Eramo, Susanna Lehtinen, Natalie D'Oria, Jannica Tjeder and Simpkins each added one. Woods led UNT with three shot attempts.
Hall finished with seven saves for North Texas, while Badders turned aside three shots for FAU.
The Owls (5-5-1, 2-2-0 SBC) continue a four-game home stand next weekend, when they welcome Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM to FAU Field.
