MURFREESBORO, TN - Casey LaRocca broke the FAU career assists record in a loss to Middle Tennessee (24-30, 18-30, 20-30) on Friday night.
LaRocca entered the night needing 15 assists to pass Jeana Boyle for first in school history. The record-breaking assist came on a Morgan Johns kill to make the score 21-13 in favor of Middle Tennessee in the second game of the match. LaRocca ended the night with 28 assists, giving her 3,414 for her career.
Middle Tennessee led 19-12 in the first game before the FAU was able to pull within four at 21-17. The Owls got no closer as the Blue Raiders took the next three points on their way to a 30-24 win. The two teams battled for control early in game two before a Leslie Clark serving run gave Middle Tennessee an 11-7 lead. That scoring spree was the turning point in game two as FAU was unable to gain any traction in a 30-18 loss.
Game three started in a manner similar to game two with neither squad able to sustain any momentum. The key in this game was a 9-2 Blue Raider run than took the game from 19-16 to 28-18 as Middle Tennessee took the game 30-20 to close out the match. The Owls (6-17, 3-10 Sun Belt) also fell to the Blue Raiders (25-2, 12-1) in three games on October 11 in a match that was held at Grandview Prep.
Johns had a match-high 15 kills for the Owls who now move on to Western Kentucky to take on the Hilltoppers who defeated the Owls in three games back on October 13. Live stats and video for Saturday's match will be available on wkusports.com. The match starts at 3 p.m. Eastern.
