Boca Raton, FL - Mistoria Brown recorded her fourth double-double of the season on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as Florida Atlantic University fell to Louisiana-Monroe, 76-72.
"Turnovers and free-throws were very costly today," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We're getting closer to getting a Sun Belt win, but we've got to cut down on the mistakes."
Brown scored 14 of her team-high 22 points in the second frame. The senior also added a season-best 14 rebounds on the night.
In the first half FAU came out of the gates with a 9-2 lead after two Shuteamia Brayboy free-throws at the 18:03 mark. ULM responded and took their first advantage, 12-11, with 15:32 left in the first on a Lottie Moore free-throw. The lead would see-saw seven times throughout the first-half, as the Owls clung to a 35-28 advantage at the 2:58 mark. The Warhawks ended the frame on a 9-0 run, and took a 37-35 score into the locker room.
Entering the second, ULM leapt out to a 46-37 advantage with 15:55 left. After building their lead to as many as 12 points, FAU responded and trailed by only five points after a Carla Stubbs trifecta at the 6:26 mark. ULM picked up the defensive intensity, and held the Owls to two points for the next five minutes.
With only 46 ticks on the clock ULM held onto a 73-63 lead. FAU hit a lay-up that was followed soon after by a Cristal Randolph three to make it a five point deficit with 28 seconds left. ULM would build its lead back to seven on two free-throws, but the Owls came right back as they connected on four straight points to trail 75-72 with two seconds left. LaJeanna Howard buried one shot from the charity stripe with 1.7 seconds left to secure the 76-72 win.
Both sides combined for 51 fouls and 71 free-throws. FAU shot only 56.4 percent from the free throw line compared to the 62.5 percent mark for ULM. The Owls out rebounded their opponent 60-42. ULM shot 40.0 percent compared to Florida Atlantic's 33.8 percent mark.
Cristal Randolph and Demina Anderson each had 11 points on the afternoon. Breana Cox added nine points and six boards to go along with three blocks. Carla Stubbs had a productive day as well, notching six points and eight rebounds.
Louisiana-Monroe was led by senior LaJeanna Howard's 22 points and five rebounds. She shot 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Shannon Lloyd narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.
FAU will head on a two-game road trip next week, as take on Denver at 7 p.m. on Thursday and North Texas at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
