The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team opened its home schedule with a 1-0 victory over Mercer on Friday night. The victory improves the Owls record to 1-3-0.
The match was physical from the opening kickoff as the two teams combined for 31 fouls, 11 cards and an ejection on the night. Both teams were called for several hard tackles as they sought to gain an advantage early in the match. The aggressive play led to 11 first half shots. The outstanding play of both keepers kept the match scoreless as it went to halftime.
The physical play continued after the break and the intensity increased as the match went on. The intensity had no effect on the scoreboard as the teams remained deadlocked well into the second half. In the 65th minute, FAU forward Shire Standnes was able to break the stalemate as he controlled a ball that was misplayed by Mercer keeper David Bird and tapped it in for the goal.
FAU withstood a late charge by Mercer as the Bears tried to rally and tie the match. The Owl defense stood tall and was able to preserve the victory. Phillip Lamarre continued his stellar play in goal and registered his first career shutout.
The Owls continue their homestand Sunday as they host Binghamton at noon.
