MONROE, La. (AP) - Florida Atlantic quarterback Sean Clayton went 12-of-18 for 164 yards and a touchdown on Saturday to edge by Louisiana-Monroe, 21-19, and win its Sun Belt Conference opener.
The win was the Owls (1-4) first against Louisiana-Monroe in three tries and their first of the season.
Louisiana-Monroe (1-3) outgained FAU in total offense, 407-336, but could not overcome two turnovers and six penalties.
After Kinsmon Lancaster, the Warhawks' quarterback, went down with an injury, Chance Payne filled in and completed 11-of-20 passes for 160 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown to wide receiver Darrell McNeal that closed the scoring at 21-19.
