On the final day of action at the Holiday Inn Classic in Bozeman, MT, Florida Atlantic University dropped two matches to the University of Nevada (3-0) and Creighton University (3-0).
In game one against Nevada (1-1), a Janelle Sarauw (St. Thomas, V.I.) kill knotted the game at 17 before the Wolfpack scored the next six points behind the serving of Tristin Johnson. Johnson had three service aces during the run and finished the afternoon with four aces. The Wolfpack closed out game one with a service ace at 30-23.
Nevada kept the momentum throughout the second game and closed it out at 30-16 before a third-game marathon ensued. The Owls fought to the finish but were unable to capitalize on a 28-25 lead. Three Nevada kills tied the contest at 28 and FAU advanced to game point at 29-28 but Nevada's Teal Ericson staved it off. The teams traded points to a 33-33 tie before a kill by Jordan Staker and an Allison Hernandez kill closed out the match at 35-33.
Hernandez finished the match with a match-high 13 digs.
FAU was led by Sarauw's 18 kills, while Iana Andonova (Margate, FL) posted a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Kaila Janssen also recorded 10 digs.
Against Creighton, the Owls held a 25-23 lead in game one, but saw the Bluejays rebound behind three kills from Carolyn Decker. Creighton then went on to hit .516 in game two and .345 in game three to improve to 3-0. Andonova had her third double-digit kill match of the weekend with 13 kill and Sarauw added nine. Nikki Hartman (Deltona, FL) finished with a match-high 11 kills.
Kelly Goc finished with 10 kills for Creighton and setter Korie Lebeda dished out 40 assists. Leveda was named the Tournament MVP, while FAU's Andonova was named to the All-Tournament Team.
FAU will travel to the Colorado State Invitational next weekend. The Owls will face James Madison University, Colorado State and Wake Forest.
