At its annual Sun Belt Football Media Day, the conference announced its 2006 Preseason All-Sun Belt Team and Preseason Poll on Monday. Florida Atlantic University sophomore Jervonte Jackson earned recognition as a defensive lineman, while the Owls placed seventh in the preseason poll.
Last season Jackson played in every game and was a leader on the defensive line. He tallied 38 total tackles in his rookie campaign and finished with a career-high 10 tackles against Middle Tennessee. A native of Opa Locka, FL, Jackson also recorded one sack and four tackles for a loss.
FAU was picked to finish seventh in the league by the conference's head coaches. The Owls finished with a 2-9 record in 2005, the team's first full season at the Division I level and in the Sun Belt. The team will have more experience in 2006 as the Owls return eight offensive and seven defensive starters.
Last season's representative in the New Orleans Bowl, Arkansas State, is picked to finish second this season behind Louisiana-Lafeyette. The two teams earned the conference tri-championship after finishing with a 5-2 Sun Belt record along with Louisiana-Monroe. The Ragin' Cajuns return 16 starters from a team that finished the 2005 regular season with five consecutive wins.
On Sept. 2, FAU will kickoff the season at Clemson. The contest will be the first of five straight road games before the team hosts Southern Utah at Lockhart Stadium for the home opener on Oct. 12.
