BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University head women's basketball coach Chancellor Dugan has announced the hiring of FAU grad Tamala Vaughn as an assistant coach.
Vaughn comes back to her alma mater for her first stint as a collegiate coach and will work closely with the development of FAU's post players. Her four-year career (1996-98, 1999-01) spanned 102 games at Florida Atlantic, playing her final two seasons under Dugan.
"I'm looking forward to working with Tami," stated Dugan. "She was such a hard worker as a player and I know that that continued into her high school coaching career. She knows the state of Florida and has great contacts. After seeing the talent that she showed in the post for FAU, I know that Tami will make valuable contributions in all areas for the staff and especially with our post players."
Vaughn is the fifth-leading scorer in program history with 1,165 career points and ranks among the all-time career leaders in field goals made (4th), field goals attempted (3rd) and free throws made (10th). With 542 rebounds, she is one of four Owls to have more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.
The Tallahassee native still holds the sophomore class record for points (434) and field goals (176). Major surgery on the ACL in both knees caused her to miss the 1998-99 season but she came back to lead the team in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg) while starting 24 games as a senior.
Vaughn's basketball experiences include three seasons as a head coach in the Fort Lauderdale area - from 2001 to 2003 at Northeast High School and the 2005-06 season at Pompano Beach High School. She played professionally in Europe from 2002 to 2004.
After completing her bachelor's in Arts and Humanities in 2001, Vaughn became an elementary teacher from 2002 until joining the FAU staff. She was recently honored as Teacher of the Year by Park Lakes Elementary.
Vaughn is currently pursuing her master's in Management and Administration of Educational Programs at Nova Southeastern in Davie, FL.
