BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team celebrated senior night by defeating Florida International 8-0 in six innings at FAU Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Seniors Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) saw their regular season careers end victorious, thanks in part to a strong team effort in the circle. Three Owls gave up just two hits and walked two in the game.
Sachs scored once while Arriaga crossed home once and drove in one. Arriaga reached base safely three times in four plate appearances, with a single and two walks.
Junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.) threw three perfect innings as the starter, striking out two in the process. Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched innings four and five, fanning two and allowing one hit and one walk.
Junior Meghan Doonan (Wallingford, Conn.) closed the game in the circle, recording her first career save. Stauffer moved to 9-13 with the win, and the Owls struck out five as a staff.
Junior Jenna Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.) had the biggest night offensively, collecting three hits, scoring twice and driving in two for Florida Atlantic. Freshman Kala Guy (Hollywood, Fla.) enacted the eight-run mercy rule with a two-RBI double with the bases loaded in the sixth.
Sophomore Melissa Moore (Miami, Fla.) drove in two with a walk and single. Junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored two and had one RBI.
Guy's blast to right field ended a five-run sixth in which FIU walked four batters, with all four turning into scores. Lopez also plated two runs with a triple down the right-field line in the inning.
Freshman Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) and pinch hitter Annie Voyles (Bronson, Fla.) got the inning rolling with back-to-back one-out walks. One out later, Lopez's triple drove them home. Consecutive walks to Corso and Arriaga opened the door for an RBI single by sophomore Melissa Moore (Miami, Fla.) and Guy's game ender.
Florida Atlantic put a digit on the scoreboard first, scoring twice in the first. Lopez and Corso connected on consecutive one-out singles, with Lopez scoring as a result and Arriaga driving Corso home on a single up the middle.
Florida Atlantic's third run came in the fifth, taking advantage of an error and three consecutive walks to plate Sachs with an unearned run. Moore earned the RBI with her free pass.
The Owls totaled eight free passes in the game and had seven hits. Kerri Houck took the loss, falling to 4-7 for FIU (25-26).
Florida Atlantic (29-22) is next in action on Thursday, May 11, in the Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championships at FAU Softball Stadium. Tickets and more information are available by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
