BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team will close the 2006 regular season on Wednesday, May 3, when the Owls host Florida International at 7:00 p.m. at FAU Softball Stadium.
Before the game, Florida Atlantic will recognize seniors Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) in their final regular season game. The game will be FAU's last outing before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, which take place May 11-13 in Boca Raton.
Florida Atlantic (28-22, 15-5 A-Sun), which is guaranteed no less than the no. 2 seed for the tournament, wrapped up conference play on Monday evening by sweeping North Florida 5-4 and 7-6. The Owls, who share second place in the conference with Kennesaw State (15-5 A-Sun), must now wait until at least Thursday to see if they will earn at least a share of the conference regular season crown.
Florida Atlantic is chasing first-place Stetson (12-4 A-Sun), which has a doubleheader with North Florida (9-9 A-Sun) on Thursday and then ends the regular season with Jacksonville (6-12 A-Sun) on Saturday. With Kennesaw being ineligible for the tournament, two Stetson losses in those four games will give FAU the no. 1 seed in the Championships.
One Stetson loss means the Owls share the regular season crown and still are the no. 2 seed in the tournament.
While Wednesday's game has no bearing on the A-Sun race, the Owls are looking for a sweep of the Golden Panthers (25-25, 8-4 Sun Belt) in the final non-conference meeting between the two schools. Next season, Florida Atlantic and FIU will be reunited as conference foes when FAU moves to the Sun Belt Conference.
The Owls and Golden Panthers last squared off as conference opponents in 1998 A-Sun play. In this season's previous meeting, Florida Atlantic topped FIU 7-2 on April 4, scoring five runs in the top of the ninth.
Arriaga and Sachs have made up the left side of the infield for most of the 2006 season. Both are currently hitting over .300 on the year and have led the Owls to 16 wins in their last 20 games.
