MACON, GA - The Florida Atlantic University softball team has officially qualified for the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championships.
Without even stepping onto the field Thursday, the Owls (23-21, 10-4 A-Sun) moved into position to be guaranteed an invitation to the tournament, which they host May 11-13 at FAU Softball Stadium. Six teams earn invites to the championships, with Kennesaw State (14-4 A-Sun) and North Florida (9-7) not being eligible while reclassifying to Division I.
By virtue of Lipscomb's two losses to Kennesaw State on Thursday, the Bisons (3-11), currently the seventh-best team among the teams eligible for the championships, can no longer move past Florida Atlantic in the standings. Both FAU and Lipscomb have six games remaining on their conference schedules.
The berth opens the door for Florida Atlantic to pursue its ninth A-Sun title in the last 10 years. The Owls would qualify for the NCAA Softball Championships for the seventh time by winning the A-Sun tournament.
Campbell (11-7), despite two losses to Stetson on Thursday, also locked up a bid with Lipscomb's losses. The Camels have just two games remaining in A-Sun play.
Stetson (10-2), which has been in first place all season after being projected second behind Florida Atlantic in the preseason polls, will wrap up its berth with one more win or an East Tennessee State loss. That opportunity may come on Sunday, when the Hatters face the Bucs (2-10).
Florida Atlantic's doubleheader with Mercer (22-22, 8-4 A-Sun) has even greater meaning after the Bears dropped a doubleheader against Stetson on Tuesday. The Owls can claim at least the no. 2 seed with a sweep of Mercer on Saturday (6:00 p.m., FAU Softball Stadium) and Jacksonville (22-32, 6-10 A-Sun) on Sunday (6:00 p.m., JU Softball Stadium), while Mercer moves to the edge of elimination from the regular-season title race with two losses at FAU and sweeps by Stetson at Gardner-Webb (6-10) and ETSU.
GWU and Jacksonville are currently tied for the fifth seed. No eligible teams have officially dropped out of contention for the tournament, with Lipscomb, ETSU and Belmont (1-11) rounding out the standings.
