BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team returns home this week, ending a three-week stretch away from FAU Softball Stadium.
The Owls closed the nine-game road trip by displaying an offensive potency that could make them the favorite again in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, which starts May 11 in Boca Raton. After averaging 3.3 runs and 6.1 hits per game during the first 38 games of the season, Florida Atlantic pushed those per-game figures to 8.0 runs and 10.8 hits during six games in Tennessee this past weekend.
FAU rolled up 48 runs and 65 hits in sweeping doubleheaders with East Tennessee State, Belmont and Lipscomb from Thursday through Saturday. A 2-1 win over Belmont on Friday was the closest challenge of the weekend, as the Owls' margin of victory was at least five runs in each of the other five games.
Florida Atlantic batted .359 as a team in the Volunteer State, raising its overall average to a season-best .257. Individually, nine Owls hit .353 or better on the weekend, led by senior Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) with a .556 average.
During its longest stretch of the season away from Boca, Florida Atlantic went 7-2 overall, also getting a win over Florida International and dropping two one-run games to conference leader Stetson. Up next, the Owls face another conference leader in Mercer.
The Bears (22-20, 8-2 A-Sun) travel to South Florida on Saturday with a win over Stetson under their belts, a victory that helped to pull them into a first-place tie with the Hatters (8-2 A-Sun). Mercer's 3-3 week was keyed by sophomore Jamie Madruga, who hit .611 with three doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs to edge out Arriaga for A-Sun Player of the Week.
Stetson and Mercer hold two-loss leads over Florida Atlantic (23-21 overall), Campbell and Kennesaw State, all of whom are 10-4 in Atlantic Sun play. With the appropriate combination of wins and/or Lipscomb losses this week, both FAU and Campbell would qualify for the A-Sun Championships.
With Kennesaw and sixth-place North Florida (7-7 A-Sun) ineligible for the tournament, the top four teams are each at least four losses clear of Jacksonville (6-8), the current fifth seed. The Dolphins, who have six games remaining in their conference season, are also battling Gardner-Webb (5-9) and Lipscomb (3-9) for the sixth and final seed, significantly raising the stakes on FAU's doubleheader at JU (22-20 overall) on Sunday.
Junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) leads Florida Atlantic with a .350 average, .505 slugging percentage, .451 on-base percentage and 23 runs. Arriaga's 21 RBIs and six doubles are the best on the team.
Both doubleheaders start at 6:00 p.m.
