Boca Raton, FL - Jenna Lopez, coming off a light weekend due to injury, made the best use of her time in Saturday's action in the Florida Atlantic University Pepsi Classic. The Owls watched Auburn, ranked no. 20, nationally, come away with a 10-2 victory over Boston College. The second game FAU followed with a 3-2 victory over BC and then fell to Auburn 4-1.
Game one was knotted at zero before the Owls drew the first blood in the fourth. Becky Brandies led off the top of the fourth with a single to left. Brandies then moved to second on a Danielle Arriaga single to short and moved up on a Boston College illegal pitch. With one out, catcher Charlotte Baird doubled to center field scoring both Brandies and Arriaga. Baird was then replaced by Marlene Lopez who immediately put the pressure on BC by trying to steal third. The batter was called out on the play but Lopez was on third and ready for an FAU insurance run. Marlene Lopez was then singled home by twin sister Jenna, who was 3-for-4 at the plate against BC including the team's final RBI of the game.
Jen Musillo returned to the mound to give one run back to Boston College. Musillo picked up the victory to move to 2-1 on the year with a six innings of work. She allowed nine hits and just the one run, which was earned, with four strikeouts and two walks.
Musillo was relieved in the seventh by Kathryn Stauffer who pitched the final inning of the game to pick up her second save of the season. Stauffer gave up four hits, a run and a strikeout.
The second game began in the circle for the Auburn Tigers. Beth DiPietro retired 10 FAU batters via the strikeout and saw her no hitter broken in the six with a Jessica Sachs triple to right center. Sachs then crossed home on a Jenna Lopez single but, the Owls couldn't muster much more against DiPietro who improved to 6-1 on the season.
Games will begin Sunday morning at 10 a.m. between Boston College and Auburn. Florida Atlantic will join the mix at noon and 2 p.m.
