BOCA RATON, FL - Four outstanding pitching efforts in two games involving the Florida Atlantic University softball team on Saturday evening as the Owls (11-17) lost to Connecticut 2-0 and North Carolina 2-1 on day two of the 2006 FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament at FAU Softball Stadium.
Florida Atlantic junior Jen Musillo struck out five batters in the opener, walking none and allowing just four hits in falling to 5-5 on the year. Musillo set down the side in order four times and allowed just four runners to reach second base.
Krista Micalczyk held Florida Atlantic hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings. Connecticut plated one run in the first inning and another in the fourth to give her all the run support she would need.
FAU senior Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) drove a pitch into centerfield with one out in the sixth to end Micalczyk's bid for the no-hitter. Micalczyk induced a fly to center and grounder to third to end the threat.
Just one runner moved past first base for FAU, that being pinch runner Marlene Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.) in the third. Micalczyk struck out six and walked three in throwing the complete game, moving to 3-4 on the year.
North Carolina 2, Florida Atlantic 1
Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took a heart-breaking loss for Florida Atlantic in the nightcap. Stauffer allowed two runs and just one earned while striking out five in falling to 4-11 on the year.
A mistake in the bottom of the fifth brought home the game-winning run. With runners on first and second, Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) corralled a fly in right field to secure the second out of the inning and misfired on her throw to the infield, allowing UNC's decisive run to score from second.
Senior Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) had two hits and drove home junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) for a run in the second. North Carolina senior Crystal Cox shot down 15 Owls via the strikeout and recorded her 1,000 K in the process.
Florida Atlantic will play on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Massachusetts in the fifth/sixth-place game.
