BOCA RATON, FL - Two dramatic games were decided in the final inning for the Florida Atlantic University softball team on Saturday evening during day two of the 2006 FAU Worth Classic at FAU Softball Stadium.
Behind some aggressive base running, the Owls (10-13) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to slip past Bowling Green 4-1 in the opener. With junior Marlene Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.) on first and freshman Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) on second, freshman Kala Guy (Hollywood, Fla.) put the ball into play to the third baseman, who bobbled the ball and fired to first in an attempt to force Guy out.
Lopez did not slow in rounding third and slid in safely as a relay throw to the catcher went up the line, also allowing Brandies and Guy to garner an additional base. Sophomore Lauren Crandall (DeLand, Fla.) plated the two freshmen with a single to left off of the pitcher's glove.
Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) made that lead hold in the bottom of the seventh to record her second consecutive win. Stauffer is now 3-9 on the year after allowing three hits and one run while striking out four.
Crandall finished with two hits and three RBIs. The leftfielder also drove in Brandies with an RBI double in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 1-1.
Seton Hall 3, Florida Atlantic 0
A three-game winning streak for the Owls came to a close in the nightcap as Seton Hall scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning in 3-0 victory. Junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.) pitched seven scoreless innings in regulation and surrendered just four hits in the game.
FAU mounted one significant scoring threat in the game, as Brandies reached third base with two outs in the second inning, which subsequently ended with a strikeout looking. The Owls had five runners reach base in the third but grounded into three putouts at second base during the inning.
Just two Owls reached second base during innings three through seven.
FAU's 3-1 record in the tournament makes them the no. 1 seed for championship play. The Owls will battle either #2 BGSU or #3 Seton Hall in Sunday's finale.
