Boca Raton - Florida Atlantic University's softball team entered Saturday evening's games in the drivers seat after seeing sixth ranked Alabama fall to Missouri State, however, the Owls couldn't take advantage after facing two pitchers who kept FAU off balance and took two games in the Dunkin Donuts Classic.
Long Island was the first to down the Owls with a run in the second, another in the fourth and two in the fifth. The Owls were unable to counter however junior Shauna Corso, a Seal Beach, CA native, registered three of the team's five hits. Kala Guy and Charlotte Baird were credited with the team's remaining two hits.
Kathryn Stauffer, a freshman from Pembroke Pines, FL, took the loss and fell to 1-4 after pitching six innings. Stauffer saw the Blackbirds tally five hits but capitalize on miscues with four runs, two of which were earned. Stauffer retired two via the strikeout and walked no one.
The nightcap saw an inspired no. 6 Alabama return to the field after suffering a 2-0 loss to Missouri State earlier in the day.
The Crimson Tide's Stephanie VanBrakle started the game and retired seven of the first 10 batters via the strikeout. The Alabama bats and base running was aggressive scoring three in the second behind a bases loaded two-run single by Ashley Holcombe in the second. The third run came across the plate following a wild pitch. VanBrakle would finish with 13 punch-outs.
That would be all Alabama needed to assure a spot in Sunday's championship game but it would plate one more in the third and three in the top of the sixth.
The Owls' offense was held to just one hit, a single by Shauna Corso.
Alabama improved to 8-1 on the year while the Owls fell to 3-6. The Owls will play in the early game against Mississippi in a rematch of a 3-0 Owl victory on Friday.
