After the first day of competition at the Sun Belt Championships, Florida Atlantic University's swimming and diving teams have broken school records and won several events as the women's team jumped out to an early lead in the three day competition.
The men's squad started the meet by setting a Sun Belt Conference Conference and Championship record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:20.85. The time also broke the FAU record by more than a second.
Eren Onurlu broke an individual record in the 50 free. He sprinted to a time of 20.18 to set a conference and championship meet record along with breaking the FAU record set by Pavel Babaev last season. The time was also fast enough to be an NCAA B Standard time.
Kevin Bartell was also an individual winner in the 200 IM. The sophomore touched the wall in 1:52.31. Geni Burts took the 200 IM on the women's side with a time of 2:05.22
Jenny Harms took second in the 500 free, narrowly missing the top finisher by .4 seconds with a time of 5:00.51
Closing out the first day of action, the men won the title in the 400 medley relay. Jonathan Pinto, David Parker, Kevin Bartell and Eren Onurlu teamed for a time of 3:20.49 for the win.
The championships will continue on Friday with the preliminaries starting at 12:30 and the finals beginning at 8:30 p.m.
