The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team honored its seniors on Saturday afternoon by defeating Troy University 3-1 to earn a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next week. Iana Andonova and Cassi Ociesa played their last contest at FAU Arena as the Owls improved to 11-17, 7-10 SBC.
Krystena Castro (Nanuet, NY) paced the Owls with 16 kills and Justine Petry (Trumansburg, NY) and Kaila Janssen chipped in 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Petry finished with a .462 hitting percentage and added seven blocks.
After dropping game one 31-29, FAU responded by hitting .344 in game two and holding Troy to 16 points.
The Owls held the Trojans under 20 points in game three before making a surge in game four. Troy got to within 29-27 but FAU's .419 hitting percentage in the game was too much for the Trojans to overcome.
Troy was led by Jean McCarthy's 15 kills followed by Aubre Smith's 14. Carla Rasuck finished with a match-high 17 digs for the Trojans.
FAU enters the Sun Belt Tournament next week as the no. 8 seed. The tournament runs from November 15-18 in Denton, TX.
