TEMPE, AZ - Florida Atlantic women's basketball opened the 2006-2007 season with a 74-44 loss to No. 20 New Mexico at the Veterans Day Classic in Tempe, AZ.
"There were positives to take out of this game, even though we didn't win," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "The freshmen did a great job in their first match and didn't back down against their competition."
The Owls started off strong, building a 4-0 lead with 17 minutes left thanks to a triple from Brittany Bowe and an Andrea Taylor free throw. New Mexico would respond by going on a 10-0 run and controlled much of the first half's tempo. The Lobos built a lead as big as 24 before the Owl's ended the frame with 9-3 run.
Senior Katie Montgomery's 10-point effort paced the Lobos in the first stanza. Bowe led the Owls with eight points entering the break. New Mexico took a 41-23 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, FAU showed some offensive consistency by going on a 9-1 run to cut the Lobos lead to 56-35 with. 9:17 to play. New Mexico used five different double-digit scorers to build the lead to 30 and cement the victory.
Sophomore Breana Cox led the Owls with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field. Taylor, a freshman, was FAU's top rebounder with six. New Mexico was lead by senior Julie Briody and her 17-point, six-rebound performance. Montgomery nailed four three-pointers on her way to a 16-point afternoon. New Mexico shot 43.3 % from the field on the day compared to the Owls 24.2% effort.
