Lake Buena Vista, FL -- Friederike Feil and Trisha Doyle led the Florida Atlantic University women's cross country team while Earl Barlow led the men's team at the Disney Cross Country Classic on Saturday in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
Feil (17:53.03) finished second, just 0.23 seconds behind the winner Jael Koech of Florida Southern (17:52.03).
"She really turned it on at the end, and if she would have had another 50 meters she might have caught her," head coach Alex Smolka said.
Doyle (17:56.15) finished third, and once again ran along side Feil for the majority of the race. The two have pushed each other all season long, and with each race they continue to improve as the team approaches the Sun Belt Championship.
"It's helping them both. They really run well together and help each other a lot during the race," Smolka said. "We improved our times a lot over last year and we had Iki and Trisha run great times. We just need to get the rest of the team a little bit closer to close that gap. The real positive thing is that we beat all of the in-state schools and we improved our times from last year."
The women's team finished fifth, but finished with the third best average time behind Brigham Young and IPFW.
Monika Grabowiecka ran a time of 19:46.77 to finish 36th and Ashley Wilcox finished 46th with a time of 19:53.15. Allison Wilcox finished 62nd in the field of 287 with a time of 20:15.79
The men's team was led by Barlow, who finished 84th with a time of 27:54.54. Freshman Stephen Dassin was second among the Owls, finishing 89th with a time of 28:04.58. Jordan Zwick rounded out FAU's top three, finishing 92nd in a field of 239 in 28:09.89.
"The men's program is definitely on the move. We're still training hard but this shows us we are moving in the right direction and things are looking very strong as we approach the conference meet," Smolka said.
The Owls will split their squad next week, with some of the team traveling to Miami for a tri-meet with Florida International and Miami, while the rest of the team will head up to Stetson for the Hatter Invitational.
