Lafayette, LA -- Cristina Rodriguez scored the first goal of her collegiate career but a goal in the final minute doomed the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team versus Louisiana-Lafayette in Lafayette, LA on Friday.
The Ragin' Cajuns (6-5-2, 3-2-0 SBC) picked up a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over the Owls (4-7-2, 1-4-0 SBC) thanks to a break away goal off the foot of Courtney Hofland with just 31 seconds remaining on the clock.
Heather Ulliman scored her second goal of the season off a pass from Erika Saffer in the 10th minute to give ULL an early lead, but the Owls controlled much of the first-half play. FAU outshot ULL 6-3 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Jessica Badders got the start in net for FAU, but left the game after 30:45 of play. She allowed the Ulliman goal and made one save. Megan Coyne replaced the sophomore in net.
After half-time, the offenses opened up a bit. The two teams combined for 17 shots (9-8, FAU) and the keepers had to make 10 saves combined in the final 45 minutes. Coyne made four, while ULL keeper Stephanie Weston made six for a total of eight in the game.
The game seemed headed for overtime, until Hofland managed to beat the Owl defense as time winded down, scoring the deciding goal.
Rodriguez led the Owls with three shots, two on goal. Susanna Lehtinen, Tessa McGarrity, and Sonia Richards each added a pair of shots on goal.
The loss was FAU's fifth in its last six games and third consecutive in conference play.
The one-goal loss is the fourth of the season for the Owls.
FAU completes the Louisiana road trip on Sunday, when the Owls will travel to Louisiana-Monroe for another conference contest. Game-time is set for 1 p.m., eastern.
