Despite several long rallies, Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team dropped a match to Denver University on Friday night at FAU Arena. The Pioneers took the match in three games (30-24, 30-28, 30-28) by holding off late surges by the Owls. Freshman Krystena Castro paced the Owls with 13 kills and a .385 hitting percentage.
In game one, Denver (10-7, 3-2 SBC) jumped out to an early lead and hung on for the win by hitting .375 in the frame. Kim Muller helped the Pioneers out with six kills in 12 attempts. FAU's Castro (Nanuet, NY) topped her counterpart with six kills in eight attempts in game one.
FAU (7-10, 4-3 SBC) topped its opponent in game two with a .188 hitting percentage compared to DU's .164. The Owls managed to stay within two at the end of the game, but DU spread out its offense and got kills from Lisa Hunter, Emmy Davidsmeyer and Kim Muller to win the game.
Castro tied game three at 27-27 with a kill before an FAU error and kills by DU's Jacqueline Paul and Lisa Hunter sealed the win for the Pioneers. Hunter finished with a double-double in the match with 10 kills and 10 digs. Holly Benson also accomplished the feat with a match-high 14 kills and 15 digs. Libero Alyssa Hampton tallied 16 digs.
FAU's Kaila Janssen (Whitdy, Ontario, Canada) finished with 13 digs. On Saturday night the Owls will face another conference opponent, the University of North Texas at 7 p.m. in FAU Arena. The Mean Green is coming off a match at Florida International on Friday night.
