In a four-game match on Tuesday night at FAU Arena, Florida International University outlasted Florida Atlantic University 27-30, 30-24, 30-21, 34-32 in a battle for first place in the Sun Belt Conference. The Golden Panthers improve to 14-4, 6-0 SBC, while FAU falls to 7-9, 4-2 SBC.
After FAU took game one, FIU found its offense in the next two games as the team hit .405 and .512. Yarimar Rosa provided plenty of offense on the outside for the Golden Panthers as she finished with a match-high 29 kills. Fellow outside hitter Arasay Guerra followed close behind with 24 kills of her own and a .400 hitting percentage.
The Owls looked to even the match at two games apiece when they held a 29-28 advantage in game four, but Rosa connected on one of her kills to extend the game. FAU would post another game point at 32-31 but an FAU error and two kills from Guerra sealed the match for Florida International.
Iana Andonova (Margate, FL) paced the Owls with 18 kills followed by Sun Belt Player of the Week Justine Petry's 17 kills and .484 hitting percentage. Petry (Trumansburg, NY) also contributed on five of FAU's 11 blocks in the match.
The loss to the Golden Panthers is the first in the last five meetings
Florida Atlantic will continue Sun Belt play on Friday and Saturday when Denver and North Texas visit FAU Arena for 7 p.m. matches.
