Philadelphia, PA - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team beat Philadelphia University 2-0 on Sunday.
The victory completed a huge turnaround for the Owls, who began their first year in the Atlantic Soccer Conference by going 0-3-1 in their first four league matches. FAU has gone 3-0-0 since that point, including two shutouts.
The Owls entered the weekend needing two wins to guarantee themselves a spot in the conference tournament. They responded with a 2-1 victory at Howard on Friday and today's 2-0 decision.
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie at halftime, which was due in part to the strong winds on the field. Shire Standnes would break the deadlock just 13 seconds into the second half as he scored an unassisted goal to put the Owls up 1-0. Standnes would strike again in the 90th minute to ice the victory for the Owls.
It was Standnes' first career two goal game and the first individual two goal game of the season for the Owls.
Freshman keeper Phillip Lamarre had five saves for his fifth shutout of the season. Lamarre joins Carlos Ortiz and Anders Granstad for that mark.
FAU will now enter the ASC tournament as the third seed. The tournament will be hosted by regular season champion Adelphi, with Hartwick and Philadelphia rounding out the field.
The Owls will face second-seeded Hartwick in the tournament semifinals, followed by Philadelphia facing Adelphi in the second semifinal.
The ASC tournament starts in Garden City, NY on Friday.
