Garden City, NY - Luka Lau scored on a header in the 33rd minute to put the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team into the finals of the Atlantic Soccer Tournament.
The victory improves the Owls' record to 7-8-1.
The match was a defensive struggle with both teams struggling to maintain possession. Lau's header came on a cross into the box from Franz Chevannes. The Owls' defense was able to make the goal stand up, withstanding a furious rally by Hartwick.
The win avenged a 6-0 loss to the Hawks earlier this season. FAU keeper Phillip Lamarre made 4 saves to set a new school record for shutouts in a season with six.
"We did a good job of sticking to the game plan we came up with before the match," head men's soccer coach Kos Donev said.
The Owls now advance to the Atlantic Soccer Conference finals to take on tournament host Adelphi. The Panthers beat FAU 1-0 in Boca Raton on Oct. 7.
The finals start at 1 p.m. on Sunday
