The 2006 season for the men's tennis team of Florida Atlantic University kicked off on Saturday, as the Owls dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 11 Florida State University in the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
FAU (0-1) took two matches from No. 11 FSU (1-0) despite the Owls being forced to play without the squad's No. 1 player, who is battling an injury, and one more starter also being held out of the match.
J.P. Bounassar, who transferred to FAU from FSU, and Mauriccio Paiz won their matches at #3 and #5, respectively.
"I was very proud of these guys, today," said David Komie, FAU's head coach. " They fearlessly battled the #11 team in the country from beginning to end. We have overcome many obstacles including the hurricane which knocked us out for nearly a month as well as injuries and eligibility issues. The six guys who played today have stuck together and worked their butts off. They competed hard while representing the university well with excellent composure and sportsmanship. We walked out of there with our heads held high."
FAU will continue its opening weekend when the Owls travel to Troy, AL to face conference rival Troy on Sunday.
