Oxley Center - Florida Atlantic University's Owl Club held its monthly meeting Jan. 8 in the Tom Oxley Founders' lounge giving board members the opportunity to meet head coaches Howard Schnellenberger, Matt Doherty and Chancellor Dugan.
"Volunteers are essential to the success of the University," said Dr. Staller, FAU's Owl Club President. "We have over 400 student athletes at FAU. When the student athletes graduate, they will become professional, but it probably won't be in sports. That is why scholarships are so important to the education process."
The organization was reorganized a year ago with the mission to raise scholarship dollars for FAU student athletes, which number more than 400.
"More than 200 full scholarships are awarded each season to student athletes who represent FAU," said Shelley Binegar, FAU's Owl Club Director. "These scholarship dollars are not state funded, therefore we look for outside funding. The Owl Club realizes its most significant impact can be in the form of sending a young man or woman to college and has taken upon the enormous task of raising unrestricted dollars."
While it is a working organization, the Owl Club's efforts are directly witnessed at games and social functions, much like the annual golf tournament, scheduled for May 14, and the Athletic Department Auction, scheduled for April 18.
Individuals are welcome to attend the Clubs meetings, many of which are scheduled around FAU games. The Owl Club is also open to corporations who have the similar goal of raising money for students to attend college through scholarship dollars.
