Owls Gut Out a 57-55 Win Over Stetson

BOCA RATON, FL - An excellent team effort led Florida Atlantic University to a 57-55 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson on Saturday evening at FAU Arena. The win lifted the Owls record to 4-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The Owls got off to slow a start on the offensive end as they trailed,12-4, at the 15:15 mark, but FAU scored 14 of the final 21 points of the first half, to make the score 27-26 in favor of the Hatters at the break.
Cristal Randolph sparked the Owls offense as she connected on two threes to make it a 15-12 Hatter advantage with 12:26 left in the stanza.
Janene Maclin and Nefertiti Walker combined for all 27 first half points for the Hatters as they shot 11-21 from the floor, while the remaining Hatters were 0-10 on their attempts.
Amanda Bulin stepped up the defensive intensity with two blocks on Maclin in the final five minutes of the half. She also snapped a six minute scoreless streak for the Owls when she converted inside at the 6:19 mark of the frame to bring FAU within eight, 22-14.
"I was so pround of the way Amanda played tonight. That was a senior leader stepping up and lifting our whole team," head coach Chancellor Dugan said following the game.
FAU jumped ahead of the Stetson early in the second half, 31-27, as Missy Glaser and Shontavia Williams scored the first five points of the session.
The Hatters got within two, 55-53, as Jacly Piloto split a pair of free throws with 1:19 remaining. Piloto cut it to one, 56-55, as she connected inside with 5 seconds left.
Stetson fouled Glaser and she split pair of charity tosses to make it 57-55 with 4.9 seconds left in the game. A running three point attempt at the buzzer by Sharnesha Smith came up errant to preserve the win for the Owls.
The Owls stiff defense contained Maclin and Walker in the second stanza, holding them to just 10 points.
Demina Anderson lead FAU with 14 points on the night and Randolph added 11 points as she connected on three of four triples.
FAU will hit the road next week as it will battle East Tennesssee State University on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:00 pm and take on A-Sun newcomer Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Both games can be heard on www.fausports.com
